Artist Statement / Bio

In 2008, Marcia Erickson received the ClayHouston Festival Emerging Artist Award. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Houston, Erickson pursued coursework in Ceramics and developed a passion for making. In 2011, Erickson was a resident artist at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.   Her celadon glazed sgraffito Fish Tumbler was included in Lilstreet International 2009 "Drink: Funtional Forms for Every Libation" and her set of 3 drinkfest fish cups were included in  "Strictly Functional Pottery National 2014."

Her work, Three Fish bowls, a series of white and black sgraffito'd bowls featuring stylized fish motif mirrors the stressful and calm times surrounding the weather event Hurricane Ike in Houston.

Fish and Radiation cups, reflects sentiments surrounding the Fukushima nuclear crisis of 2011. The carved fish and radiation imagery on her cup conveys Erickson’s empathy for the affected residents living near the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Energy motifs: nuclear, solar, fish, bikes and plants continue to cover Erickson's work. The pieces are scaled for the hand and created for functional use.
